Knitted plush jumpsuit. Knitted overalls for newborns with patterns for beginners

Expecting a new addition to the family, the baby's expectant mother or grandmother takes care of his dowry with great enthusiasm. And this is easy to understand: caring for the dearest little person who is about to be born brings great joy, and making a soft, beautiful cap or envelope with your own hands is simply happiness. Knowing the basics of knitting, a needlewoman who really wants to create something completely special for a baby will certainly be able to knit a jumpsuit for a newborn with knitting needles. For beginning craftswomen, the combination “maybe” turns into “definitely will” thanks to the bright impulse to embody their modest skills in one of the first gifts for a newborn.

Convenience of overalls models

In fact, there are no things more convenient for a newborn than “men” (or “slips”) that fasten in the front. The comfortably closed back, loose, non-restricting sleeves and rompers have the main advantage of being easy to put on. The overalls have the same principle, and the soft thread of medium thickness will make it very comfortable for the baby. Each type of fastener in overalls has its own advantages. The zipper allows you to speed up the process of dressing and undressing, but if you need to, for example, change a diaper, you will have to remove the overalls completely. Buttons located on the inner surface of the sliders solve this problem easily - the lower part of the overalls can be unbuttoned, the upper part cannot be removed. But it takes longer to fasten them.

Which thread is suitable for children's clothing

Knitting overalls for newborns is easy and quick, because things for a small child are almost doll-like. You should calculate the approximate time of birth of the child in order to correctly determine the threads from which you are going to create a masterpiece. For example, for a child born in the summer, a jumpsuit knitted from light cotton or linen threads is suitable for evening walks. Natural thread does not cause irritation to the skin, however, while cotton can easily be dyed in all sorts of colors, the color range of linen is somewhat limited. If the baby is born in autumn or spring, the thread should be denser and warmer. These are different types of wool: merino, cashmere, angora, alpaca or mohair. Knitting overalls for newborns can also be made from threads with synthetic additives; such thread is easier to knit, the overalls will shrink less when washed and will be more durable. But overalls are not washed so often, so preference should still be given to natural hypoallergenic threads.

How to knit overalls for a newborn with knitting needles

Having decided on the type of thread, its thickness, color, and choosing the desired size of knitting needles, you should think about the style of the model. If you don't know who will appear in the family, you can stick to neutral colors - green, yellow, orange, brown, beige. A knitted jumpsuit for newborns can be with socks (that is, it will include booties) or without, with a regular neck or hood. For autumn walks it is better to choose a closed jumpsuit. The newborn will feel comfortable and warm in it; no wind will penetrate the gap between the hat and jacket thanks to the hood.

How to calculate the size

To correctly knit overalls for a newborn with knitting needles, you will, of course, need a pattern. Small children grow quickly, and they need to develop comfortably in comfortable clothes. The sizes in terms of height and volume are on average similar for all newborns, and even if your overalls turn out to be too big for your baby, this will not last long.

Newborn babies usually weigh between 2 and 4 kg. Their clothing sizes, respectively, range from 44 to 62. Based on them, you can find any pattern in magazines or online. They are not always correct. Pay attention to the fact that the lower part of the overalls is not narrowed; keep in mind that under the overalls there will also be cotton underwear and a diaper. For an average newborn height of 49-52 cm, clothing size is 56.

Baby overalls pattern

You can use different patterns in knitting. You can knit a jumpsuit with knitting needles for newborns using regular stockinette stitch, decorate it with appliqué, or you can knit it with an elastic band, openwork, this will allow the baby to wear the jumpsuit longer due to the fact that it will be more stretchable.

Even if you choose a simple pattern, garter stitch, checkerboard or ribbed, the jumpsuit will look quite impressive. The main things to consider are freedom of movement, comfort and warmth.

If you want to make the overalls unusual, you can give preference to complex patterns with strands, meshes, and bumps, but keep in mind when choosing a pattern that the skin of a newborn is very delicate. In order not to accidentally cause him discomfort, even the very first clothes for newborns are sewn with the seams facing out, so large voluminous patterns can create some inconvenience.

Zipper or buttons

Before knitting a jumpsuit for a newborn, you need to decide on the type of fastener. If it is a zipper from the bottom to the neck, both parts of the front are knitted symmetrically. If these are buttons, then along the edges of the parts you will need to additionally knit strips, on one of which buttons will be sewn, and on the other loops will be knitted. Babies are often placed on their tummy, so large patterns on the front side may not be very comfortable.

A few more tricks

The overalls will last longer if you make the elastic longer. Don't make it tight or narrow. If you tie it twice as long, with a lapel, you will ensure that the sleeves or legs fit snugly to the baby’s legs and arms. And when the baby grows up, the lapels can be worn straightened, this will add a few centimeters to the pants and sleeves.

It is better to knit overalls for newborns on circular knitting needles: firstly, this will allow you to simultaneously knit the left and right sides of the model, and secondly, it will be much easier to combine the knitting into a single fabric.

How to knit

One of the most uncomplicated and quickly knitting patterns is “crow’s feet”, or regular garter stitch (combinations are possible). Garter stitch is very soft and loose. Therefore, a knitted jumpsuit for a newborn, a master class for which we offer here, will turn out to be very comfortable, and the growing baby will feel very comfortable in it:

  1. For each trouser leg you need to cast on 50 loops (6 loops will go to the placket with buttons on one side, 6 loops on the other side will go to the placket with loops, 38 loops will go to the knitted fabric). Garter stitch - knitting on both sides only with facial loops.
  2. Having knitted 14 cm, we proceed to simultaneously adding loops on both sides every two rows to a total of 60 loops on the knitting needles. At this point, the straps of both trouser legs need to be combined. This is done as described below.
  3. The loops from one of the slats are removed onto the auxiliary knitting needle, the loop from the second working knitting needle is removed from the working knitting needle, the loop following it is removed from the auxiliary knitting needle, then the loops are alternated from both loops in the same way, the bar is one, but doubled. In the next row, each pair of loops must be knitted together.
  4. The armhole is knitted like this: the entire number of loops, excluding 6 loops per bar, on each side is divided into three parts: the back is half the number of loops, the front two shelves in total are also half.
  5. After knitting to the shoulder seams, close the loops on the neck. Sleeves can be cast on directly from the armhole onto circular stitches. Sleeve length is 12-14 cm. We finish the sleeve with a 1x1 elastic band.

If you make the trim of the neckline and trim with double knitting, the jumpsuit will take on a factory-made look. Your baby will be the most beautiful in a jumpsuit knitted from the heart.

Whatever the weather, there is nothing more practical for a baby or toddler than a baby knitted overalls. It can be plush or with a hood. For going out, walking in the yard, visiting, playing and relaxing at home, a children's knitted raglan jumpsuit will be useful. This universal idea can easily be adapted to a variety of tasks, temperature conditions, style trends and design ideas. For warm days, children's models are created from light, breathable yarn, for cooler days - from wool yarn or mixed threads.

To knit a seamless jumpsuit on top, including for a newborn, you will need a little free time, suitable threads, knitting needles, a hook or a knitting needle. To knit patterns, it is useful to purchase special additional knitting needles or pins.

In the article we will consider the issue of choosing threads for knitting and description of knitting principles DIY baby overalls.

Model and color

The choice of model depends on the purpose, age, conditions of use and skill level of the knitter.

When planning clothes for the little ones, it is advisable to pay attention to simple in design and maximally functional children's models that can create maximum comfort newborn.

A child’s clothes should be easy to care for and take a minimum of time to restore their properties (washing, ironing, cleaning, steaming).

It is important to create models that are interesting from an aesthetic point of view, even for the youngest children. Therefore, when choosing the color and texture of the thread, you need to focus on high quality yarn (hypoallergenic dyes, non-fading thread) and usefulness of color wave for the baby's vision.

It is better to postpone the purchase of knitting threads dyed in “acid” colors until the child reaches adulthood or adolescence.

Material and texture

For newborn babies, we choose threads made of cotton, bamboo or thin low-pile that are pleasant to the touch. yarn of the best quality.

The absence of lint should be given special attention so as not to provoke the development of allergic reactions in the child due to the entry of thread particles into the respiratory tract.

The yarn should be soft and not cause discomfort when touching it.

If there are no skin problems, options mixed with acrylic are acceptable.

Design, knitting method, complexity of pattern and finishing

Using the same pattern you can create a huge number a variety of overalls and overalls for various purposes, differing in design (knitted or crocheted), pattern design, trim, material and color of threads. Therefore, for a beginning knitter, it is better to choose the simplest and most structurally laconic models with a minimum number of elements that are difficult to implement. The same applies to the knitting methods and patterns used.

In order for the work to bring joy to the needlewoman and the person for whom the item is intended, it is better to arm yourself with those knitting tools that the craftswoman has already mastered well for the first tests. Even two structurally identical models, knitted with stockinette stitch and garter stitch from the same yarn will look completely different.

By combining elements connected by these basic patterns, a beginning knitter will be able to achieve the uniqueness of each item she creates. On warm days, overalls with openwork inserts made of fine yarn will look good. For the cold season, voluminous knitting in the form of weaves, braids, Aran knitting, jacquard and Tunisian knitting is suitable.

Advice: if the openwork seems too difficult to perform, you can use a little knitting trick. For example, we knit overalls for a newborn to wear during the hot season. Let's take a thin thread, and knitting needles or a hook three or four times thicker than recommended for such yarn. We make the knitting itself looser. To calculate the knitting density per centimeter of finished fabric, we make a sample by casting on ten loops and knitting 10 rows.
